Annotation tool now publicly available

Try our annotation tool

At Syncopate, we're working to build better digital legal infrastructure. To us, that means better tools for working with digitised legal documents, including legislation.

Today we're sharing a prototype annotation tool that lets users create annotations and tags on individual blocks of content. These annotations are stored as a dataset, enabling them to be re-used in other applications and contexts.

All annotations are stored in your web browser locally - Syncopate cannot access them at all. You can export annotation sets to make back-ups and to share them with others for private or public collaboration. We'll be sharing an import tool to foster this collaboration shortly.

If you'd like to publish your annotations alongside tagged copies of legal instruments or other documents, get in touch and we can discuss how to do that for you.

Tell us if you're using it

We have only limited information on whether people are using the tool and how they're using it. Do let us know if you're trying the tool, find any bugs, have any questions, or want to chat about anything else.

How to access the tool

To open the tool on any instrument in our ref.synco.pt library, click the small quill in the bottom right corner.

Take a look at the "Read Me" instructions to learn about how the tool works, as well as some keyboard shortcuts to work faster.

Each annotation or group of tags is linked to an individual granular block. The Block ID is displayed in the annotation tool. You can also see it update in the URL field in your browser whenever you click a new block. Add new tags in the "Tags" field, and re-use tags by clicking the options below the tags box. Tags show up as annotations as soon as you enter them.

Once you've created some tags, you can click tags at the top or to the side of the instrument to show and hide blocks with that tag. Click the X button at the top of the document to reset the filter.

There's plenty more to come!

We're working on projects and using these tools ourselves, and we're also developing new tools and features all the time. Sign up for our mailing list or follow us on LinkedIn for updates.
